“And at the end of the day, I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”
On December 23, 2015 Vernon Parker officially retired after 52 years of employment at Hubbard Peanut Company. Vernon was the very first full time, year round employee hired by Dot and H J Hubbard as their business began to grow and expand.
“For all of those fifty-two years, Vernon was the first person here in the morning and among the last to leave at night,” according to Lynne Rabil, company president. “He fired up the cooker at 5:00 a.m. to get everything rolling for the rest of the crew who arrives at 8:00 a.m. He is a role model for everyone here because of his strong and reliable work ethic.” Hubbard Peanut Company’s Production Manager, David Benton, says, “I’ve worked with Vernon for twenty-five years, and can easily say that I’ve never met a more dedicated employee. He cares deeply about the business, his co-workers, and most importantly our customers. Vernon is always willing to go the extra mile.”
Not only does Parker know everything there is to know about cooking Hubs peanuts, he gets a sparkle in his eye when he talks about the past. “I was born into the business and have worked here for a few years myself, but his institutional knowledge about Hubbard Peanut Company is something I reference quite frequently,” according to Rabil. “Vernon literally whistles while he works, and we will miss hearing that tell tale whistle around the plant, but he lives around the corner and we expect to see him often!”
