Why Virginia Peanuts Are the Best: Learn More From 12 About Town Today
Since 1954, Hubs has cooked Super Extra-Large Virginia peanuts the same way Dot Hubbard did when she started the business in Sedley, Virginia. In this segment from 12 About Town Today, Marshall, grandson of Hubs founders Dot and HJ Hubbard, explains the family’s story, why southeastern Virginia grows such exceptional peanuts, and why a handful of Hubs is a powerhouse of energy. Most Virginia peanuts come from a small group of counties in the southeastern part of the state. Southampton, Surry, Sussex, Isle of Wight, and Suffolk are all part of this peanut-growing region. Southampton County leads the way. It grows more peanuts than any other locality in Virginia, and back when Dot was getting started, it was the largest county in the country growing the type of peanut she wanted to cook. That’s where the Hubs story begins. Dot grew up in Sedley, and her first peanuts came from her father’s farm. She believed most people had never tasted a really good Virginia peanut, and she set out to change that. So what makes this land so good for peanuts? Two things, the soil and the climate. The Soil Peanuts don’t grow on trees. They’re legumes that grow beneath the soil, so the ground they’re planted in makes all the difference. The soil here is just right for the Virginia-type peanut. The Climate Soil is only half of it. Virginia-type peanuts also need a long, warm season, roughly 130 to 150 warm days, to fully mature. Here’s how a growing season usually goes. May: Seeds go in the ground, and the first plants appear within about 10 to 12 days Fall: Harvest begins After digging: The peanuts rest on top of the field for several days to dry naturally Fall is a special time in Southampton County. As harvest gets underway, an earthy aroma settles over the fields. Why Are Virginia Peanuts So Big? Virginia-type peanuts are the largest peanuts grown in the U.S. Their size is why they’re known as the ballpark peanut, and why so many are sold in the shell or as gourmet peanuts. At Hubs, we take size even further. We use only the top 1% of the crop. Dot only wanted the biggest peanuts, and she picked them out by size long before anyone had a name for them. The industry eventually caught up and named that grade Super Extra-Large. Every Hubs peanut comes from that top 1%. You’ll notice it the moment you open a tin. What Are Blister Fried Peanuts? A great peanut still needs the right cook, and that’s where Dot’s other big idea comes in. Working from a family recipe, Dot developed a way of cooking Virginia peanuts called blister frying. It went on to become an industry standard. More than 70 years later, we still cook every batch her way. Two Steps, More Than 70 Years Soak: Raw peanuts are soaked in hot water. Fry: They’re fried at high heat in coconut oil. Simple, and done the same way every time. The result is a peanut with full flavor and the crunch you hear across the room. The About Town host tried a spoonful of our Salted Virginia Peanuts on air and summed it up as a nice crunch with just enough salt. Are Peanuts a Good Source of Protein? The simple answer is, yes. A 1-ounce serving of peanuts, about 35 nuts, has 7 grams of protein. That’s why we call peanuts a powerhouse of energy. Peanuts also naturally contain a range of nutrients, including Fiber Folate: A B vitamin Niacin: Another B vitamin Arginine: An amino acid Resveratrol: A plant compound also found in grapes Our ingredient list stays short, too. Our Salted Virginia Peanuts are made with peanuts, water, and salt, then fried in coconut oil. Hubs Flavors to Try Every Hubs flavor starts with the same Super Extra-Large Virginia peanut. From there, it’s up to you. Salted Virginia Peanuts: The classic Hubs peanut, blister fried and lightly salted. It’s one of our bestsellers and the one the host tasted on air. Honey Kissed Peanuts: Finished with an all-natural honey coating and a touch of salt. Lightly sweet, and just as good over ice cream, yogurt, or salads as it is by the handful. Chocolate Covered Peanuts: We cook these in Sedley, then coat them in chocolate at the Hubs Vine in Franklin. In warmer months, they ship with cool gel packs to help keep them fresh, and they’re a favorite heading into the holidays. We also brought our Happy Hour Mix and Peanut Brittle to About Town. Not sure where to start? Our guide to finding your Hubs peanut breaks down our most popular flavors. Visit the Hubs Vine If you’re ever in Franklin, stop by the Hubs Vine. It’s our market, plus a 7,000-square-foot event space where we host lunches and events and bring in music, chefs, and artists. We also give back close to home. Sales of our Single Origin peanuts [LINK: Single Origin product page] go directly to our local food bank. Those peanuts are grown at Izzy’s Field in Franklin, the first farm-to-food-bank project in Virginia. Grown in Virginia. Cooked in Sedley. Since 1954. From the sandy fields of Southampton County to Dot’s blister frying method, every part of the Hubs story starts right here in Virginia. Same peanuts. Same process. Same standard. Raw Peanuts: The Best Ways to Use Your Bag
Raw peanuts show up in a lot of recipes for a reason. They let you control the flavor from the start instead of working around whatever seasoning or roast level a package already has. If you've never bought a bag of raw peanuts before, here's what to know about what they are, what they offer, and how to put them to use. What Is a Raw Peanut? In simple terms, a raw peanut is a peanut that hasn't been roasted or cooked. It's the peanut in its natural, unprocessed state, which means the flavor is milder and the texture is softer than what you'd get from a roasted variety like our Salted Virginia Peanuts. Because they haven't been through a roasting process, raw peanuts should always be cooked before eating, whether that's roasting, boiling, or using them in a recipe that calls for heat. Types of Raw Peanuts Not all raw peanuts are the same. In the U.S., peanuts are generally grown as one of four types, Virginia, Runner, Spanish, and Valencia, each with its own size and flavor profile. Virginia peanuts, the type Hubs grows, are known for their larger size. You'll also see raw peanuts sold a couple of different ways. Some are shelled, with the outer shell already removed, while others are sold in-shell, left whole for roasting or boiling at home. Redskin peanuts, sometimes labeled "red skin raw peanuts," keep the thin natural skin underneath the shell instead of having it removed. That skin holds some of the peanut's own nutrients and antioxidants, and leaving it on gives the peanut a noticeably deeper, more robust flavor once cooked compared to a blanched peanut with the skin taken off. Once roasted and salted, that same redskin peanut becomes our Big Reds, a bolder, more full flavored alternative to a standard salted peanut. Benefits of Raw Peanuts Raw peanuts are a solid source of plant protein and fiber. According to USDA FoodData Central, raw Virginia peanuts provide about 25 grams of protein, 49 grams of fat, and 17 grams of carbohydrates per cup, with roughly 8.5 grams of dietary fiber, working out to around 7 grams of protein and 2.4 grams of fiber per one-ounce serving. They also contain calcium and iron in modest amounts. You can look up the full nutrient breakdown yourself on USDA FoodData Central, the federal database for food composition, if you want to compare raw peanuts to other foods in your diet. Uses for Raw Peanuts Raw peanuts are a starting point more than a finished snack. Some of the most common ways to use them include the following. Home roasting:Roast them in the oven or an air fryer and season them yourself. Boiling: A Southern classic, especially with in-shell peanuts simmered in a salty brine. Peanut brittle and candies: Raw peanuts are a common base for homemade brittle, similar to our own Peanut Brittle. Homemade peanut butter: Roasting and grinding your own peanuts gives you full control over the texture and salt. How to Buy Raw Peanuts When you're buying raw peanuts, look for peanuts that are fresh, uniform in size, and free of any off smell, since raw peanuts don't have a roasting process to mask quality issues. Hubs sells raw Virginia redskin peanuts by the bag, sourced from the same Virginia crop used across the rest of the Hubs lineup, including our Big Reds and Salted Virginia Peanuts. Frequently Asked Questions Q: What are the benefits of eating raw peanuts?A: Raw peanuts offer protein, fiber, and minerals like calcium and iron, all in their unroasted, unprocessed form. Q: How can I use raw peanuts in cooking?A: Roast them, boil them, grind them into peanut butter, or use them as the base for homemade brittle. Since they're raw, they should be cooked before eating. Q:Where can I buy high-quality raw peanuts? A: Look for a source that sells peanuts fresh and sourced directly from the crop. At Hubs, we sell raw Virginia redskin peanuts by the bag for home roasting and recipes.
The Hubs Holiday Gift Guide: Peanut Gifts for Everyone on Your List
Coworkers, neighbors, teachers, the client you want to thank before the year wraps up. The holiday season already comes with a full list, so why make the gift part of it complicated? At Hubs, our collection of Virginia peanuts covers a lot of that list at once. Here's a look at the Hubs flavors and gift sets that work best for the holidays. Salted Virginia Peanuts Our Salted Virginia Peanuts are where Hubs started, blister fried and lightly salted to bring out the natural flavor of the peanut. It's the safest pick on this list, the one flavor almost everyone already likes, which makes it a solid choice for anyone whose taste you're not totally sure of. Choco Covered Peanuts For the person with a sweet tooth, our Choco Covered Peanuts coat that same Virginia peanut in a layer of chocolate. They're a favorite for hostess gifts and holiday tins specifically, since the sweet and salty combination works for people who don't usually reach for a plain can of peanuts. As one of our customers says, they're "the best choco peanuts I've ever tried." Honey Kissed Peanuts Our Honey Kissed Peanuts finish the peanut with a light coating of honey and a touch of salt, landing somewhere between sweet and savory. They're a good option for a gift that feels a little different from the standard salted or chocolate route without going too far in either direction. Sweet Heat Peanuts If someone on your list likes a little kick, our Sweet Heat Peanuts blend mild sweet chili peppers with the same Virginia peanut base. It's a good gift for the person who always asks for the spicy option on the menu, and it holds up well next to a cheese board or a game day spread if that's more their thing. Peanut Brittle For a gift that leans more dessert, our Peanut Brittle brings the same peanuts into a classic brittle. It's an easy add-on to a gift box or a good standalone gift for anyone who wants something to snap and share rather than snack on by the handful. Harvest Gold For a gift that covers more ground in one tin, our Harvest Gold is a collection that features both great value and goodness; a variety that is the perfect gift for home or the office. A 20 oz. tin of original Hubs Salted peanuts is surrounded by other favorites including single 12 oz. tins of our Choco Covered, Honey Kissed Hubs, Sweet Heat, and cooked Redskins. Gift Sets Built for the Holiday Season If you'd rather send a set than pick a single flavor, Hubs has three gift sets to choose from that are perfect for holiday and corporate gifting: Gift Trios: three 12 oz cans, choose from Savvy & Savory (Big Reds, Salted, Sweet Heat), Hubs Trifecta (Honey Kissed, Salted, Sweet Heat), or Sweet Treat (Peanut Brittle, Salted, Honey Kissed) Gift Duo: Salted and Choco Covered Peanuts, available November through March. Holiday Gift Trio: Choco Covered, Salted, and Sweet Heat, available November through March. More Than 70 Years of Virginia Peanuts Every flavor on this list starts with the same Super Extra-Large Virginia peanuts Hubs has used since Dot Hubbard founded the company in Sedley, Virginia, in 1954. The process hasn't changed much since then, which is part of why a tin of Hubs still reads as a gift with some substance behind it, not just another holiday snack. If you're gifting to a longer list, whether that's a full office or an extended family, our Corporate Gifting page has options for ordering in bulk or sending to multiple recipients at once.

Avocado Toast with Peanut Salsa Macha
Creamy avocado meets a bold peanut salsa macha for a simple meal that's a little different from your everyday toast. The salsa comes together with chopped Hubs Unsalted Virginia Peanuts, toasted red pepper, and a little smoky heat from chipotle, then gets spooned generously over avocado and warm, cheesy toast. Salsa Macha Makes about 6 tablespoons (enough for a few servings, with extra to keep on hand) ¼ cup Hubs Unsalted Virginia Peanuts, roughly chopped ¼ cup olive oil 1½ teaspoons chopped garlic 1½ teaspoons chipotle peppers in adobo, minced 1½ teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes ¼ teaspoon light brown sugar, if desired Savory Avocado Toast Makes 1 serving 1 slice whole wheat sandwich bread ½ teaspoon garlic oil 1 teaspoon parmesan cheese, fancy shredded ½ ripe avocado Squeeze of fresh lime juice Pinch of salt 2 tablespoons Salsa Macha, for topping Directions: Salsa Macha Combine the chopped peanuts, olive oil, garlic, chipotle, and red pepper flakes in a bowl. Stir in the brown sugar if you'd like a little balance against the heat. Let it sit for a few minutes so the flavors come together before serving. Avocado Toast Brush the bread with garlic oil and sprinkle with parmesan. Bake at 375°F for about 5 minutes, until lightly toasted. Halve the avocado and remove the pit. Dice the flesh while it's still in the skin, then scoop it into a bowl. Add a squeeze of lime juice and a pinch of salt, then mash with the back of a fork to your preferred texture. Spread the mashed avocado over the toast. Top generously with Salsa Macha and serve right away. It's the kind of recipe that turns a plain slice of toast into something worth slowing down for, and a good reminder that the right peanut can carry a dish just as easily as it carries a snack tin.

Chocolate Covered Peanuts Done the Right Way. Done the Hubs Way
Chocolate and peanuts have been a pairing worth trusting for generations, and Hubs Choco Covered Peanuts get it right. It starts with the same Super Extra-Large Virginia peanut we've used since 1954, blister-fried for signature crunch, then finished with a light coat of chocolate. Why Choose Hubs Chocolate Covered Peanuts Anyone can dip a peanut in chocolate. Doing it in a way that respects the peanut is the harder part, and it's the part we've spent seven decades perfecting. We use only Super XL Virginia peanuts, prized for their size, their rich flavor, and a crunch most peanuts can't match. Before any chocolate gets involved, each batch goes through the same precise blister-fry process Dot Hubbard pioneered, the step that locks in flavor and gives every Hubs peanut its signature bite. Only then does the chocolate come in, applied in a light, even coating that adds real chocolate flavor without turning the peanut into an afterthought. A lot of chocolate-covered peanuts on store shelves lean on the chocolate to cover up an average peanut. Ours don't need the cover-up. You can taste the Virginia peanut in every bite, and that's the whole point. Creative Ways to Enjoy A tin of Hubs Chocolate Covered Peanuts is a finished snack on its own. It's also a great starting point. Sundae topping: Crush a handful over vanilla ice cream for crunch that survives the melt, or layer them into a sundae between scoops for texture in every bite. Trail mix, upgraded: Mix with pretzels, dried apricots, and a few Honey Kissed Peanuts for a sweet-salty combination that outlasts a long hike. Charcuterie sweet spot: Add a small bowl to a cheese board next to brie and fresh berries. They disappear faster than anything else on the table. Straight from the tin: Sometimes the best way to enjoy them needs no assembly at all. Seasonal Availability & Shipping Chocolate melts. We plan around that. From November through March, our full lineup of Chocolate Covered Peanut tins and case packs ships as usual, weather permitting, in single cans up to 20-per-case, all in our classic 20 oz tin. That window covers most of the holiday season, so timing your gift order is easy. Once the weather turns warm, we switch to a 4-pack shipped with cool gel packs, sent out Monday through Wednesday on two-day express shipping to keep transit time short and the chocolate intact. Same peanut. Same chocolate. The only thing that changes is how carefully we get it to your door. Why Hubs, After All These Years We didn't add chocolate to chase a trend. We added it because a Super XL Virginia peanut can carry a little sweetness without losing what made it worth eating in the first place. That's the same thinking behind every variety we make, whether it's honey, heat, or chocolate. The flavor changes. The standard doesn't. That standard has held for more than 70 years, because it was never about following what other brands were doing. It was about starting with the best peanut available and refusing to cut corners after that. Ready to taste the difference? Explore Hubs Chocolate Covered Peanuts and see why there's nuthing better.
Homemade Peanut Butter
With just one ingredient and a food processor, Hubs Peanuts transform into a rich, creamy peanut spread in under 10 minutes. Serves Best For Total Time Difficulty About 1½ – 2 cups Spreads, Snacks, Pantry Staples 10 Mins Easy Ingredients: 3 cups Hubs Roasted Peanuts Salted Peanuts or Unsalted Peanuts Sea salt, to taste (if using unsalted peanuts) Directions: Add 3 cups of Hubs Peanuts to the bowl of a food processor. Process continuously, pausing every 30 seconds to 1 minute to scrape down the sides of the bowl and let the motor rest. Continue this process-and-scrape cycle through all the stages below until the mixture is fully smooth. Watch the texture change in stages as you keep processing. First chunky and coarse, then clumping into a thick ball, and finally loosening into a smooth, creamy spread. Keep processing (with pauses to scrape) until it reaches this final smooth stage — the full process takes about 8 to 10 minutes. If using unsalted peanuts, taste and stir in sea salt as needed. TIP: Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Stir well before each use. How To Enjoy Homemade Peanut Butter Spread it on toast, bagels, or English muffins. Swirl it into oatmeal or yogurt. Use it as a dip for apple slices, celery, or pretzels. Blend it into smoothies Mix it into sauces or dressings Layer it into a classic PB&J sandwich

Where Do Peanuts Come From? The Process of Harvesting Virginia Peanuts
Peanuts are one of those foods that are always around. They're packed into school lunches, poured into bowls at family gatherings, served at baseball games, tucked into holiday gift baskets, and enjoyed by the handful on road trips. They're one of those foods that always seem to be around, but most of us have never stopped to think about where they actually come from. At Hubs, we've been preparing Virginia peanuts since 1954, but every batch starts long before it reaches our kitchen in Sedley. Let's take a closer look at how they're grown, harvested, and prepared before they become the Hubs peanuts you've enjoyed for generations. Where Do Virginia Peanuts Come From? Although we call them nuts, peanuts are actually legumes. They grow beneath the ground after the plant flowers above the soil, making them one of the few foods harvested this way. Virginia is known for producing the largest peanuts in the country. Their size, texture, and flavor make them a favorite for gourmet snacking, gifting, and entertaining. At Hubs, every variety begins with carefully selected Super Extra-Large Virginia peanuts, chosen for the exceptional size and crunch that have defined the brand for generations. 1. Planting Virginia peanut seeds are planted in the spring once the soil reaches about 65°F and the risk of frost has passed. The seeds are placed several inches apart in sandy, well-drained soil, giving each plant enough room to grow throughout the summer. 2. Flowering About a month after planting, small yellow flowers begin to bloom above the ground. Once pollinated, each flower produces a slender stem called a peg. Unlike most plants, the peg grows downward instead of upward, pushing itself into the soil where the peanut pod begins to form. 3. Growing Underground As the pegs continue developing beneath the surface, peanut pods slowly mature underground over the next several weeks. While the peanuts grow below the soil, the leafy green plant continues growing above ground, absorbing sunlight and nutrients that help the crop develop. 4. Digging By early fall, the peanuts have reached maturity and are ready for harvest. Farmers use specialized equipment called a peanut digger to gently lift the entire plant from the ground and turn it upside down, leaving the peanut pods exposed to the air while still attached to the vine. 5. Drying After digging, the plants remain in the field for two to three days to dry naturally in the sun. This step reduces the moisture inside the peanuts, helping preserve their quality and preparing them for harvesting and storage. 6. Picking & Grading Once the plants have dried, a harvesting machine removes the peanut pods from the vines. The peanuts are then cleaned and graded based on size and quality. From the Harvest to Hubs Every peanut follows a similar journey through the field. What makes Hubs different begins after harvest. In 1954, Dorothy "Dot" Hubbard believed people had never truly experienced the taste of a great Virginia peanut. Using peanuts grown on her father's farm in Southampton County, she perfected her family's recipe and pioneered a unique cooking technique that would eventually become the industry standard for gourmet Virginia peanuts. She didn't stop there. Dot insisted on selecting only the largest peanuts from each crop. Those specifications eventually became the highly sought-after Super Extra-Large grade Virginia peanuts are known for today. As demand grew, she and her husband, HJ, continued refining their cooking process while never compromising on quality. More than 70 years later, Hubs still prepares its peanuts in Sedley, Virginia, where the company first began Our Best-Selling Virginia Peanuts Salted Peanuts Choco Covered Peanuts Sweet Heat Honey Kissed Hubs What Makes Hubs Peanuts Different? Dot Hubbard Receives Lifetime Achievement Award from American Peanut Council
According to the American Peanut Council, Dorothy "Dot" Hubbard was a trailblazer in terms of popularizing a peanut product, but she was also a female entrepreneur in a time when that was rare.
With flavors old and new, Hubs Peanuts are good for you, the earth and the community
"Female entrepreneurship was rare in the 1950s when Dot Hubbard became the pioneer of her craft. It all started as a labor of love. Dot, a mother of four and schoolteacher in Sedley, Virginia, enjoyed hand-picking the biggest peanuts she could find on her father's farm, blister-frying them in her own kitchen and then gifting them to friends. "Her friends loved them and started requesting more of them," said Marshall Rabil, director of sales and marketing at Hubbard Peanut Company -- and Dot's grandson. "My grandparents thought, 'Maybe this could work.'" It worked indeed." Read More on FeastandField.net » - With flavors old and new, Hubs Peanuts are good for you, the earth and the community.
Meet the Makers: Hubs Peanuts
"The small town of Sedley is in the coastal plain of Virginia, about an hour's drive from Virginia Beach. With loamy soil and a humid climate, it's prime for peanut farming. In midsummer, tiny yellow flowers blossom on peanut vines, putting down root-like pegs in the soil where legumes grow. Many refer to the area as "peanut country." Hubs Peanuts--best known for their jumbo-sized Virginia goobers--is headquartered here. Husband and wife HJ and Dot Hubbard launched the peanut brand from their Sedley home in 1954. Hubs still operates out of the same house today, though some things have changed." Read More on The Local Palate Marketplace » - Meet the Makers: Hubs Peanuts

Small Business of the Year - Hubbard Peanut Company
"Hubbard Peanut Co. may be a small, family-owned business in Sedley, population 470, but it is known for its gourmet high-end products that feature extra-large peanuts. "In Sedley, we've always been off the beaten path," said Marshall Rabil, director of sales and marketing. "It's amazing how many people will pilgrimage here annually. We're out here in the country, but it's quaint and a nice place to call home." The company, which employees 15 full-time and about 50 seasonal workers, was founded in 1954 in Dot and H.J. Hubbard's small, five-room house on Sycamore Avenue, which is about a 10-minute drive from Franklin."
Lynne Rabil's Interview with American Peanut Council
APC: How did Hubbard Peanut Company start? LR: After growing up in the depression and my dad serving during WWII and the Korean conflict, starting life was not easy for my parents and many others of their generation. Our mother was a school teacher but after I was born she decided not to return to teaching. Before long twins were on the way (born 18 months after I ) and she wanted a little extra spending money to help my dad take care of our growing family. Having been raised in the largest peanut producing county in the country, she remembered how popular her family's recipe for peanuts had been with her college friends during the war years. She knew that most people had never experienced the taste of top-quality Virginia peanuts, so with a great family recipe and a supply of peanuts grown on her father's farm, Dot had everything needed to start a home based business. We can't pinpoint the day my dad first sold and delivered Dot's unique peanuts to the Virginian Drugstore on Main Street in Franklin, but we know the year was 1954 and the price of a 1 oz. bag of Hubs was ten cents. APC: Planters Peanuts were processed at that time next door in Suffolk. How did Hubbard Peanut compete? LR: The process that Dot pioneered was different from Planters dry roasted snack peanuts. She perfected a technique/recipe that called for blanching in water before frying in oil. Ultimately, Dot's specification for the largest peanuts from the crop and those that were too large to go through the peanut planting equipment became a new and highly sought after, but "unofficial", USDA grading standard of Super Extra Large. I don't think people were accustomed to the idea of giving peanuts as gifts until Dot began shipping gourmet Virginia peanuts directly into people's homes and businesses. APC: How did your father get involved? LR: We've been telling Dot's story throughout the years, but true success required teamwork. My dad's hard work and entrepreneurial vision were as important as Dot's daily juggle to manage family and business. HJ worked a full-time job at a paper company but after hours and weekends, he was integrally involved in every aspect of business at Hubbard Peanut Company; from designing packaging to planning and overseeing every building or equipment expansion. Early on, "Hub" was the key delivery man, dropping off small packets of peanuts that carried his nickname everywhere he went. Later as the business grew and with help from local machinists, HJ invented equipment that would allow Dot to cook large volumes of peanuts more efficiently while maintaining freshness and quality. APC: When did the family realize Hubbard Peanuts could be a viable and sustaining business? LR: By the time my brother was born in 1958, Dot was fully immersed in a thriving business and had moved beyond the kitchen to a separate building on the property for cooking and packaging. She began to hire people to assist. We children were always cheap labor, but I think the first iteration of a continuous cooking operation around 1960 was when my parents knew Hubbard Peanut Company might send the four of us to college. APC: How did technology change the business? LR: When Dot decided to start a business, there weren't many mail order companies and even fewer who were shipping gourmet gift foods. There was no system for zip codes in the U.S. UPS wasn't operating in Virginia and FedEx had not yet been founded. At the time, there was no such thing as a credit card. Most typewriters were manual, and computers were only a dream. Over the years, we transitioned with technology and have tried to stay on the cutting edge while continuing to do things in the same manner that my parents did as far as attention to detail, quality and taking care of our customers. APC: How has the American Peanut Council helped your business? LR: The one thing that the Hubbard family has never lost sight of throughout time is quality. Since joining the American Peanut Council in 2013, one of the most important benefits is to be surrounded by like-minded professionals - and professionals who are passionate about this industry. From sourcing the best peanuts of the harvest to ensuring top notch service, the experience of each Hubs customer is paramount and on the minds of every member of the Hubs team. APC supports our mission and goals by offering thoughtful leadership on food safety, sustainability, and crisis and risk management. With ever changing technology, advances in the logistics industry, training and maintaining employee health and safety, safeguarding private information, increasing government regulations, as well as many other factors of growth and competition, we rely on APC for peanut-focused research, workshops, and education related to changes within the industry. APC: Is there anything else you'd like to add? LR: The goal of the Hubbard family and team members is to never lose sight of how and where the journey began. That's not too hard because, today, Hubs are still cooked in Sedley, right where they were originally born.

For clients, coworkers, or anyone you'd rather not overthink, Hubs has two gift sets built to cover a range of tastes in one order. Gift Trios The Gift Trios pack three 12oz cans into one box, and which flavors you get depends on the trio you choose: Savvy & Savory Threesome sticks to the classics: Big Reds, Salted Virginia Peanuts, and Sweet Heat, three peanuts built around bold, savory flavor. Hubs Trifecta spreads a little wider, pairing Honey Kissed, Salted, and Sweet Heat so the box covers sweet, classic, and spicy in one gift. Sweet Treat leans dessert, combining Peanut Brittle with Salted and Honey Kissed peanuts for a trio with more crunch and sugar than the others. Holiday Gift Duo The Gift Duo is a seasonal set (available November through March) pairing Choco Covered Peanuts with Salted and Sweet Heat, for anyone who wants a little sweetness alongside the classics. Since the chocolate can be sensitive to heat, this one ships with the season in mind.

Shocking Truth About Virginia's Peanuts by Don Harrison
"An old-school farming method returns...and yields spectacular results. The world's oldest peanut looks puny and unassuming as it rests in a display case at the Isle of Wight County Museum in Smithfield. The man who harvested it, Pembroke D. Gwaltney Sr., wrote "1890" on the smoothest side and saved it as a promotional tool for his business, one of Virginia's earliest peanut processing plants.
